Searching for DUI lawyers for the most part probably has never entered your mind, until now. If you're here, most likely you've been charged with a DUI offense. And now you need help. The purpose here is to give you some common sense information on choosing from the many DUI lawyers that are available.

Why do you need DUI Lawyers?

The answer to that question is simple. Every state now has strict penalties for DUI offenders and accomplished DUI lawyers have the experience and the knowledge to rigorously defend you against many of these penalties.

Let’s take a look at some of the most common penalties that you will face:

  1. Jail Time – each state varies on this and in many it's now mandatory. If you have a job, what do you think your employer will say when you have to spend a few days in jail?
  2. Fines And Court Costs – the fines you can face for a conviction can range anywhere from several hundreds of dollars into the thousands depending on the severity of your case.
  3. Loss Of Your Drivers License – how do you think this will affect your life? How will you get to work?

If you haven't realized it by now, these penalties can be life altering. If you're convicted, you may also be subjected to even further penalties than those stated. Think about your insurance coverage for one. You may find it difficult to even get coverage with a DUI conviction on your record.

You may have to do community service. You may even be restricted in where you travel with a DUI conviction. You may be required to attend classes at your expense. And you may even be required to install certain devices in your car, again at your expense.

Now maybe you can see why DUI lawyers are a necessity.

So how do you go about choosing skilled DUI Lawyers?

After all, time is of the essence. You need to be able to have legal representation secured as quickly as possible. This gives your attorney the ability to revue your case and to prepare your defense.

It doesn't matter how you search, whether it is by using the yellow pages or by using the computer, there are some simple guidelines you should adhere to.

Since this is such a specialized area of law, please try and avoid using an attorney that doesn't work specifically with DUI cases.

Here are the 3 main questions that you should be asking any of the DUI lawyers that you choose:

  1. What Are The Fees? – Find out exactly how much you will be charged. Most skilled DUI lawyers will charge you by the hour, so be prepared for this. It is a good idea to have a contract drawn up that is very specific and spells out everything that may be associated with your case. Make sure that the fees that you will incur handles every step of the litigation process. When you are comfortable with the fee schedule, get it in writing. Remember, you're dealing with a lawyer, so if you have any questions whatsoever, you better ask.
  2. What Happens In the Event Your Lawyer Is Not Available? - This can happen, so ask ahead of time. Become familiar with any staff that might assist you in the eventuality that this occurs. After all, you want to avoid any type of surprises especially when you have to appear in court.
  3. How Much Time Will Be Devoted To Your Case? - Many experienced DUI lawyers and those that usually have the most success, handle fewer clients. The reason being is that they can devote sufficient time to each case.

Before moving on, a few final notes on the subject of fees! You have to remember that each DUI case is different. Your fees may even be higher than a set schedule. A few examples of this scenario would be if you were charged with any type of felony or if you have any type of previous convictions. This makes your defense harder to prepare for so naturally, your costs will be higher.

To make your job easier when choosing DUI lawyers, do some research on your own before you even step into the lawyers’ office. Find out if the candidate is in good standing with the State Bar Association. You may also want to check to see if they are a member of your states Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. A majority of this information can easily be found online, so use the resources that you have available.

One of the biggest deciding factors when choosing DUI lawyers is your gut instinct. Or in other words, your good old intuition!

You need to have the feeling that your selected attorney is actually going to aggressively defend you. Sadly, not all DUI lawyers proceed in this manner and they labor under the belief that DUI cases are pretty much cut and dry. Fact of the matter is, they aren't.

If at any time you don't get this impression, then you need to continue your search until you find an attorney that can meet this criteria.

Yes it's expensive. But you need to start thinking about what you have to lose. As stated earlier, the penalties are severe and in some cases life changing. Are you prepared for that?

This is just another reason why you need to seek out skilled DUI lawyers. Whatever you do, do not try and be your own attorney. Please read that again. The DUI laws are complicated and ever changing and you have to much at stake.

What you have been charged with is serious and accomplished DUI lawyers know how to protect your freedoms.

On a final note, please do not think that drinking and driving is condoned here and that all you need to have is some good DUI lawyers at your disposal. Think about the next time you want to drink and drive. Think about all the consequences. To you and to your family!
